Rule 7 | Perspective

Lesson 6 | Circle Selfies

120 min.

Let your imagination roam. The best way to become experienced with the two vanishing points and the perspective lines is to practice in the grid of perspective lines.

Step 1 | Tinker a vanishing point board

Take a rubber band and two pins. Draw a horizon line on a sheet of cardboard. Insert the pins at the locations of the vanishing points along the horizon. Loop the rubber band around the pins. With this setup, you now have a simple system for creating a perspective grid.

Download the booklet and print it for use.

Alternatively, browse the gallery and select the grid that best suits your needs.

Instructions for Exploring a City with This Sketchbook

Prepare for Exploration
Take your sketchbook and drawing tools with you as you step out into the city. Choose a location that inspires you—a bustling square, a quiet park, or an architectural landmark.

Engage with Perspectives
Observe the city from various angles and distances. Use the principles of perspective to guide your sketches, such as vanishing points and line directions. Let the surrounding architecture, people, and atmosphere shape your artwork.

Trigger Your Imagination
As you sketch, let your imagination roam. Focus on the details that catch your eye or the overall vibe of the scene. Use the visual prompts around you to inspire creativity and new ideas.

Apply Your Sketching Skills
Draw freely, incorporating techniques like fluttering lines, line bundles, or crossing lines to create depth and spontaneity. Highlight specific elements, add details, or leave some areas open to invite interpretation.

Experiment with Colors
Once your sketch feels complete, consider adding color to bring your drawing to life. Use watercolors, pencils, or any medium that resonates with the mood of your scene.

Capture the City’s Essence
Let each sketch represent a unique perspective of the city. It’s not about perfection but about capturing the moment and the emotions it evokes.

Reflect and Build Your World
Over time, as you fill your sketchbook, you’ll create a personal map of the city—a collection of its moods, shapes, and stories seen through your eyes.

This approach triggers creativity, sharpens observation skills, and connects you deeply to your environment. Enjoy the process and let your sketches tell the story of the city and your journey through it!
