Lesson 8 | Dogs – dogs – dogs
40 min.
Drawing fastly and with the fluttering line allows you already to depict in a rapid way. Try it out and narrow down your depicting skills.
Step 1 | Watch this 3d Model of a Spanisch greyhound and take it as a model

Hello.
I’m happily Sketching. I’m drawing a dog with the first rule of the fluttering line. Why do we draw dogs? What are the advantages? And there are several, several advantages for the dog, like anatomy. The dog’s anatomy is the same anatomy that mainly all mammals have. So the joints and the bones of the legs, we have similar, elbows and ankles, wrists and all this stuff. So we learn about anatomy.
The second thing is texture. Here it is fur. That’s very beautiful to draw because you really can see the object and how the elevation lines go in the object. That helps you very much.
The other thing is, if you Google a dog, then you find something emotional. This means that everybody has a feeling toward a dog and this helps us while drawing. And this catches the observer when he sees what kind of feeling a dog or an object has. So because we are doing the expression, this is helpful. And last but not least, the dog is always a popular subject and that’s why it fits very much. For our purpose for drawing, we are doing fast sketches. So we are doing several sketches: one for two minutes, one for 90 seconds, one for 75 seconds, 60, 45, and even 30 seconds. And I do it so that you can see it, how I do it, but I do it silently so that.
You can observe me drawing and how long I do take for this. So I first draw this dog. I have to put it away so that you can see my drawing. I start with some fluttering lines and the eye. I have to find the overall proportion. I have only two minutes, but I need some time, in the beginning, to start so to know where the default form is. And afterward, I can go in, let the line flutter.
Yeah, I think this is it. Two minutes of drawing a dog. Two minutes for a dog. The second drawing is 90 seconds. For this dog, here again, I put it away.
90 seconds. This is the dog for the 45 seconds.
This is the drawing with 45 seconds.
And I dare to do this dog in 30 seconds.
How long do you need to draw a dog?
This dog is a sketch of 60 seconds and later on enhanced with a yellow pencil and some ink and a chinese brush.
Work with timeframes
You can even try to enhance this exercise with a time limit. Sketch the dog within 90 seconds, search for another position, and sketch it within 60 seconds. Search for another position and sketch it within 45 seconds. Search for another position and sketch it within 30 seconds.
Find out what your best sketching speed is. This is very individual but it might be faster then you think.
Sketching means thinking visually fast.
Sketching quickly is important for more creativity
Efficiency: When you’re working on a project with a deadline, you want to be able to quickly iterate through different ideas and concepts. If you can sketch quickly, you can explore a wider range of possibilities in less time.
Creativity: When you’re sketching quickly, you’re not worried about making a perfect drawing. Instead, you’re focused on capturing the essence of an idea or concept. This can help you to generate more creative ideas because you’re not getting bogged down in the details.
Communication: Sketches are often used as a means of communication between designers, engineers, and other stakeholders. When you can sketch quickly, you can quickly convey your ideas to others, which can help to keep projects moving forward.
Exploration: Sketching quickly allows you to explore a wide range of ideas without becoming too attached to any one concept. This can help you to think more broadly and to come up with more innovative solutions.
Overall, sketching quickly can help you to be more efficient, creative, and communicative in your work, which can lead to better outcomes and more successful projects.
