Rule 2 | Work with line bundles

Lesson 5 | Snowballs in the shape of hearts

15 min. |

Try out how this exercise has an impact on your creativity.

Step 1 | Triggering imagination

Symmetrical drawings are difficult because they demand that we constantly have to match the existing line with the next one while we are sketching.

This essential exercise can be done with all kinds of symmetric objects. Heart-shaped snowballs challenge us in two ways. We must first design the heart shape as a three-dimensional object, then imagine how this heart could appear as a sketch.

Hello everyone. Happy sketching. A little exercise for those bundles of strokes. Now we’re going to draw hearts.

We will do the same exercise as with the circles, but now with hearts. We start drawing hearts, but only the left part of the heart. And the right part… the left part… the right part, but only half.

Now the heart is good. It’s a good figure because we draw one half synthetically, while we add the other half analytically.

Is that right? Am I right? And I can balance it with a second line? Am I right? No, not at all. But maybe with a second stroke? Yes, you can.

Try it. How fast can you go? How close should you stay? How close should your two lines be?

Oh, that’s funny. Try it out. Fill your paper with hearts. Try different sizes.

This is it. Have fun drawing your heart.

For the very brave amongst you sketchers, here is a sketch of a heart for inspiration.

Imagine what a snowball heart looks like to your friend, what it looks like to your mother, and what it looks like on a happy snow day with a school class.
