Rule 1 | Let the line flutter
Lesson 7 | Figures according to low-poly specifications
40 min. |
Try to trigger your brain with low poly shapes that inspire your creativity.
Step 1 | Understanding where inspiration comes from
Abstraction is when you take away all that is not necessary but leave the essential.
We are starting with low poly figures, they are kind of abstractions. These figures may look like creatures or humans in the distance. In any case, they evoke images in our minds. We find these inner images because we have seen similar images before. So the low poly figures help us to get to our inner pictures and trigger imagination and creativity.

Welcome.
I’m drawing here on the iPad and we want to do some happy sketches with Procreate. So you can download this on the App Store for iPads to draw with and hopefully they will come to other devices as well because it’s very useful. You have all the stuff here and you have a lot of brushes that really help you to make nice lines. I very often work with sketching tools and a brush, it’s delivered, it’s Peppermint. Or you have the HP or six B pen. Those are all fine for drawing. So the surface is very intuitive. You have here the colours. You have a remembrance of the colours. You have here the size of the pencil. So for small lines, very small, thin lines and bolder lines. And it’s really helpful to have lines that you can really steer normally to a normal thing.
Okay, I do a new layer. So you have the same concept here that you have in Photoshop and all these programmes. I would like to make a drawing out of this thing. What is this thing? Actually, this can be many things. I see here a bird with the beak here and the tail here, 2 feet. And I only wanted you to trigger your fantasy so that you can draw whatever you want.
So I draw the beak and then the head and oh, well, maybe here is an eye and maybe some faint lines here. I see this like a collar, something like this. Maybe this could be a collar. And then I’m not sure. I’m drawing with fluttering lines when I’m not sure. I want a tail. Yes, I want a bigger tail. I want the tail. And you see, I draw all this later on. I can drop this out. And then actually, now is the point where I want to drop this out. So now you can see I started and now I want to do some two legs. I don’t know, they were stiff and even. And I know that some birds have some legs that have a kind of rhythm here and then they have some feet. I don’t know how feet are. So I’m doing this like this. It’s a little bit thin. Maybe here. Well, actually, I forgot the wings. But do you really miss the wings or can you profit from the fluttering line? Do you think that this maybe could be the wings? No, I do not want this. Oh, the back button. By the way, this is the night thing. Okay, next inspiration. I dare to do it even more freely. So whatever could this be? Are these eyes? Is this the mouth that is open? Is this an arm? Two legs? Is it human? Is it more robots? I don’t know. I go to blend this, to put this away. Well, I remember I had two eyes here. I don’t know how these eyes are, but those are two eyes. I work with fluttering lines. This is the purpose. I had an arm here. I do not remember. But when we had an arm, we have some fingers. All are made with fluttering lines. This is the elbow. To pronounce the elbow is always highly recommended. I remember I had something like an open mouth or whatever. I do not know what it is, but a little bit more of black of an eye and here a nose. I don’t know how to make a nose. What does a nose look like?
I don’t know. It has maybe two nostrils and maybe something like this. Many lines. I profit from these many lines. And there were some legs. Oh, I do not remember. How were these legs? They were straight. Yes, they were straight. And I think they were flatter. Something like this. And another leg. Another foot here. Something like knees. Always pronounce knees. This helps. And how can I do it? Is it nude? Has it trousers? Or I have to decide. Or even gone? No, tights. It wears tights. And here, something like this. Something like this. Okay, that’s it. Okay, so this is the second animal that I made out of these forms.
What else? What do I have to see? Okay, I have this one. This one looks to me something like sunglass. The rest I do not know. Well, I do not know. I do not know at all. What can I do? I do a new layer, so I’m free. What can I do? I remember some sunglasses. But how do the sunglasses look? That’s very difficult. So they are around here. Sunglasses? No, I want them really with a lot of fluttering lines. If I do not know about the eyes, then I do not know. Okay. And there was a head. But actually, I do not want to follow this form because I didn’t like it. Maybe some feathers here. I don’t know, I don’t know. I don’t know. I do not remember. I don’t know. Actually, I do not remember. I do not remember. What was it like? Where? Oh, well, elbow. The elbow is always nice. The elbow is always nice. The elbow is always nice. Do the elbows and fingers. Oh, fingers. That’s always difficult. I do no fingers, I just do it. Okay? This is a breast. Maybe this could be a breast. Something like this. Okay. Oh, now I do not have enough space for the feet. But the advantage of digital drawing is that I can adjust it. And because I have adjusted, I have to reduce the size of the pencil something to 30%. Okay. And then I have the legs. Oh, it tends forward. Maybe I want something like this. That one. Oh, pronounce the knees. That’s always fine. Pronounce the knees and knees again here. And feet and whatever. So I do a lot with oh, that was because I tilted too much. Because when I tilted, it works like this. Okay. Yeah, for the moment. Oh, no. I do not have ears and I do not have a mouth, but my brain makes out of this. What kind of mouth is an ear? Yeah. Why not use it like this? Okay.
You know, I just freaked outlines. I did something sometimes it was very maybe nervous and I wasn’t so sure what I really wanted. But I worked out some sketches from this inspiration and this is actually what I wanted. Triggering you to enhance your creativity is that you are able to have some small hints and that you can really make something out of this so that you can really enjoy your drawings and your creativity-skills. That’s it.
Try it out. Invent some small creatures and enjoy it. Happy sketching.
Try out colored pencils
In this exercise you need a lot of inspiration. But don’t be afraid, inspiration comes with sketching. This means, sometimes just doodle and shortly afterwards the ideas will flow.
