Rule 1 | Let the line flutter
Lesson 6 | Drawing hand gestures
30 min. |
Drawing hand gestures is a great way to practice observation. Because drawing the line with all details and lines in the right direction is almost the whole art.
Step 1 | Watch the video to understand the exercise
You will get an explication of how to manage the directions of lines in a drawing.
Watch the video and grab your material. Setup a pencil case to have all your tools at hand.

How we are starting
While the lines drawn earlier had no similarity with the hand, it is now in of the next exercise possible, a certain similarity to obtain. However, since we have not yet dealt with measurements and the proportions involved – and this would be too comprehensive at the moment – we are currently only focusing on the line itself.
We sketch the silhouette. So the outline.
Right-handed people sit down at the drawing table turned 90 degrees to the left, so that the drawing hand lies on the drawing sheet, the upper body is thus turned away from the tabletop. Attach the drawing paper to the table with some adhesive tape.
The other hand is held out directly in front of you so that it can be drawn. The view
is directed exclusively to the hand and not to the paper with the resulting drawing. The intention is to draw blind.
The situation created by this arrangement deprives the draughtsmen of control over what is drawn and what is the aim. Because the control prevents the free flow of the stroke. As far as possible, self-control should be avoided, because it prevents the observer from deepening the observation.
Now the outline of the hand is drawn, starting at the wrist on the thumb side. The
Eye slides along with the silhouette of the hand.
Every smallest curve is named – „goes by left“ – „ends abruptly“ – „swings to the left“- „goes steeply down“ …
This observation of the line itself is sketched. The basic rule is: the richer the information on the line can be included in the drawing, the more interesting the drawing is perceived by third parties. Oh, we already had that … that was that people do not find anything as interesting as other people. Basically, people are interested in the subtleties of their counterpart. The moving line expresses this.
Step 2 | Exploring Line Art: Drawing with a Twist and draw your hand gesture
Take a character from the American sign language further down.
Remember to follow each and every detail while drawing. It is important to record all of them. Because drawing with line with lots of details are attractive to look at.
